Lightning strikes computer

By Praveen on August 7th, 2009

Hey folks,

As some of you already know, I am going through a little rough time right now.  On Tuesday I was eating in my kitchen when I heard this HUGE clap of thunder right outside the house.  My alarm system started beeping and stuff, but more importantly my computer was fried…  So I have been struggling to put together a new one and it has been frustrating to say the least.  I am thinking that I will have to end up buying a new pc which is not too good because I am kind of broke right now.  “Damn the recession!”

I hope I will atleast be able to access the data from my fried computer’s hardrives.  There is where I have everything stored.  I can’t even foresee the things I would do to myself if these files could not be retrieved…

Anyway, until I setup a PC  and get back up and running, I will not be posting any new comics.  So let’s hope that happens sooner rather than later.

You can go through my archive if you haven’t already done so!  Or if you’re just tuning in, here are some of my favorite pieces:

Enjoy!

  1. That random Thunder/Rain storm, I remember it clearly, I was outside with buckets trying to save my garden and patio from flooding. That storm came out of nowhere.

I disconnected my computer when I wokeup from the thunder. Powersurge protector or not, disconnecting the power wire is key to survival(Plus I’m pretty sure my power surge bar doesn’t actually work.)

If it killed your harddrives, like I don’t know what I’d do if that happened to mine… I gotta back mine up one day. It’d be insane to lose the information of all these years I have saved.

You got a lot of finished work up on your site at least.

But if you can’t get your stuff back Praveen, well, not good.

  2. w0w, you posted just as I was checking the page… you always have timing that defies all the odds 😮

But ya, my harddrive has photos, videos (teehee), links, lots of ideas for things that I write down, logs, other various important documents & settings PLUS my art photoshop files. It’s almost like all of my life’s work on there… I am not going to think about what would happen if… NO! .. gotta think positive! Positive thoughts only. Yummy… icecream…

  3. Wow! That actually happens?? I thought it was just an urban legend! I gotta start unplugging my stuff when a storm is forecasted.

I wonder, though, if it effects external hard drives? I have two that I back my site up to, just in case…

    1. No urban legend! It sucks to be the guy who is busting this myth, but ya, it’s for realz!

It can affect external hard drives if they are connected to the computer. So as long as you ONLY connect them to the computer WHEN you are backing up (and are not backing up during a lightning storm…), you should be fine. Do you have a program that automates the backing up process for you? I have 4 computers that I need to start bakcing up periodically… It would take so long to do it manually…
