I Love My Neti Pot

By Praveen on July 25th, 2009

So I’m back from Manitoulin (if you follow me on twitter you already know this valuable piece of information!)  Waking up at 5 in the morning and seeing the sunrise on the lake is pretty amazing.  It lasts around 15 minutes but pretty much every second something changes.  It usually starts off darkish pink, then gets more saturated as the colour spreads.  Then as the sun comes up, the colours start to dissolve and everything slowly becomes lighter.  But every day is different…   Maybe I will put some pics up later 😛

The comic is a tribute to my neti pot.  I now take it wherever I go, even on the lake :P.  It has changed my life!  My nose used to be really clogged at night and this affected my breathing.  I never had restful sleep.  I had tried many things, I even had sleep studies done and was diagnosed with sleep apnea.   Sleep apnea occurs when muscles in your throat relax too much (there can be many reasons for this, e.g. obesity, allergies, structural defects etc.) and collapses.  This blocks the airways and you don’t get enough air.  This results in low oxygen levels.  When it gets too low, your body triggers a flight-or-fight type of response that forces you to wake up so you can breathe and get oxygen.  This can happen hundreds of times in the night and it is likely you wouldn’t even remember these episodes.  You don’t get into enough deep sleep which causes many problems.  You end up being tired, having memory problems, brain not functioning issues the next day.

Anyways,  I used the CPAP machine for a few years and it did help a little, but I always felt I was not treating the real problem.  (A CPAP machine provides positive airway pressure through your nose and/or mouth, which keeps the airways open.  I have even took the CPAP machine camping – there are a few comics with reference to it :P)  Now that I got a REAL neti pot and am using it twice a day, I am not even using the CPAP machine and I feel like my sleep is alot more restful.  I probably still have apnea to some extent but the neti pot has helped greatly.

  1. This is my first education of the apparently-wonderful Neti Pot. I’m so glad it works for you. And I love the colors in this particular strip. So serene.

    1. Thanks George!
